I’m so excited to announce that ABC Jazz are releasing a live album I recorded with The Nick Haywood Quintet, Friday, December 4th! It’s music of my Dad, Charlie Haden. We recorded at the Jazz Lab for the 2019 Melbourne International Jazz Festival. It features these incredible musicians: Nick Haywood (Upright Bass), Colin Hopkins (Piano), Stephen Magnusson (Guitar), Eugene Ball (Trumpet) & James McLean (Drums). You can pre-order on iTunes  from the link here. It will also be available for download and/or streaming on your preferred digital service provider on Friday, Dec. 4th. Working with Nick and his Quintet was truly inspiring. The beautiful album art is by his wife, Nellie Gibson.

They are all such wonderful human beings with so much talent, humor, and love for the world.

Singer Petra Haden excels in this beautiful and unique program of songs penned by the songwriting team of John Zorn and Jesse Harris. Friends for many years, they began working together on The Song Project in 2012, and eight years later this CD presents the full fruits of their collaboration: thirteen Zorn compositions with original lyrics by Jesse Harris. Including selections from a wide variety of Zorn CDs (and one original that has never appeared on CD before), the melodies are catchy, the lyrics heartfelt, the grooves deep and the solos profound and exhilarating. Backed by the amazing Julian Lage, Jorge Roeder and Kenny Wollesen and produced by Jesse Harris, this is a CD that you will listen to again and again.

Petra Haden Sings: The Who Sell Out (re-released April 22, 2016)

The inspiration for her sophomore effort Petra Haden Sings: The Who Sell Out came from her friend Mike Watt of MINUTEMEN who gave her a TASCAM 488 Portastudio 8-track cassette recorder with the original Who album on one track and the other seven empty, for her to fill with intricate vocal harmonies. Not only did Petra re-imagine all The Who’s singing and instrumental parts – including drums – she also tackled all the interstitial mock radio commercials so integral to the original The Who Sell Out experience.  The final result is a technical tour de force that also invites a fuller appreciation of The Who’s own achievement, bringing to the fore all the original elements of chorale music, vaudevillian schmaltz and Renaissance chamber ensemble playing.

“I was a little embarrassed to realize I was enjoying my own music so much, for in a way it was like hearing it for the first time…I love this …. She's so smart, because she listened first to what was on the original record before she started her own thesis with it. That is such a gift for one musician to give another - to really listen…” Pete Townshend on Petra Haden Sings The Who Sell Out

Petra Haden’s wondrous new album Petra Goes To The Movies offers a one of a kind opportunity to experience some cinematic soundtracks in an extraordinary new way. Epic and evocative scores have been ingeniously recreated utilizing layers of remarkably inventive vocals. Far from a mere novelty, these interpretations retain every bit of emotional resonance and inspirational might as the originals.

Out this January 22 via Anti-, the album features Petra Haden, a highly regarded session musician and former member of That Dog, delivering a cappella versions of songs from films such as Rebel Without A Cause, Taxi Driver, Superman and more.

NY Daily News - Music Review - 'Petra Haden Goes to the Movies'

" We all know the human voice is a musical instrument. But few artists push the point as literally as Petra Haden.

For several years now, the singer has used her voice alone to re-create the sound and feel of every instrument in a given work. Haden started out with “The Who Sell Out,” re-creating that entire 1967 concept album in her throat. Then, in 2007, she cooked up an a cappella take on Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” that beat “Glee” to the punch by two years with a cascading vocal intro the show may well have nicked..."

IFC.com - Exclusive download: Petra Haden “Superman Theme”

"When Petra Haden goes to the movies, she leaves doing a cappella renditions of the soundtrack theme songs. If you’re craving something invigorating, and a little old school, after all those “Man of Steel” trailers with the obligatory, overly grandiose, ubiquitous score — then we have just the thing!"...
